What's the Best Pickleball Serve?

The pickleball serve sparks a lot of debate. Should it have a lot of pace, land deep, or spin sideways? It may surprise you but the best pickleball serve strategy is more simple than that.

Some of the serves you demonstrated are illegal, the paddle head was above your wrist which is ILLEGAL!

What is the rule on a serve hitting the kitchen line is it in or a fault

CJ, on your backhand serve demo, you make contact legally below the waist. However, at 3:35 the ball appears to be released around shoulder level high. Is this legal? Thanks!

I generally hit a number of deep, not super hard serves until my opponent expects it and sets up for it. Then I throw in a different pace, spin or lob serve. I rarely use a backhand serve but lob, topspin, hard and side spin serve are all in my arsenal. I will often use the side spin if our team is up by several points, serve into the add court with back/side spin at an angle. It’s especially useful if the receiver has moved back from the baseline after a couple of hard serves.

Your serves are not legal, your wrist is NOT BELOW the paddle head at contact in your video!

I guess I need to work on a couple more options.

I always change up different serves

Deep forehand pace shots outside middle and inside with and without side spin. Equals 6 shots. Another set of the same shots using lob shots instead of pace shots is another 6. Backhand spin shots both lobs and and with pace is another 6 shots. Then their is the short corner shot that I throw in to mix it up bringing the total to around 20. One thing I would like to add is, if you find a serve that you opponent has trouble keep using it until it looks like their stance has changed to make it easier to return that particular serve.

Hi! Is it advisable to walk into your power serve? I’ve seen a few do coaches do this. I just started playing and I’ve been standing stationary. Thank you 🙂

I like to hit the serve the middle line in the back if the guy is a right handed player

  13. The watcher on December 26, 2021 at 12:37 am

The serve must be hit with an underhand stroke so that contact with the ball is made below the waist, defined as the navel. The arm must be moving in an upward arc and the highest point of the paddle head shall be below the wrist when it strikes the ball. The highest point of the paddle head cannot be above any part of the line formed where the wrist joint bends. YOUR HIGHEST POINT OF YOUR PADDLE HEAD IS NOT BELOW YOUR WRIST WHEN IT STRIKES THE BALL! FAULT ON YOU!

Variety is good. A favorite is a soft or hard forward spin along the middle line when the receiver is hanging close to the outside line.

Any video on the backspin serve that I’m struggling with?
