The Rules of Pickleball – EXPLAINED!

Ninh explains – The Rules of Pickleball. A relatively new (and popular) racket sport that’s similar to Tennis, Badminton, Squash and Table Tennis. It’s a lot easier to learn and pick up, a lot less stressful on the body and is an accessible alternative to these traditional sports.

Specific to the International Federation of Pickleball rules, watch this short beginner’s tutorial video guide on how Pickleball is played, Pickleball rules, and how to play and watch pickleball. Learn about points, volley, two bounce rule, the kitchen, paddles, and more.

In 8th grade we did a whole unit on this in PE. It was really fun at the time and I enjoyed it. Fast forward to 9th grade and I play this for my team sports final. I ended up being the only person that actually knew how the game worked, having played it before. Everyone played like it was tennis, and where getting way to competitive with it (they clearly liked physical sports more). I had the roughest time of my life trying to explain the rules to people, but ended up giving up on it and just ignored everything.

Nice video, but there are two errors. First, the serve-returner does not have the option of letting the ball bounce. It must bounce once, and only once. Also, you can play the ball from outside the court. It’s done often by better players who step wide of the kitchen to legally return a ball.

  3. Aaron Albrecht on May 1, 2021 at 10:48 pm

The Sound of the ball hitting the paddle is really cool

  4. Jeffrey Krissek on May 1, 2021 at 10:50 pm

Great video as always!! My students loved talking about this one today as we continue on with manipulative skills and on to net sports!!!

  5. Vim Alcel Naraga on May 1, 2021 at 10:51 pm

To be honest though, this actually feels boring. The players just stand right in front of the no volley area and just tap the ball back to the opponents.

  6. harokidgaming on May 1, 2021 at 10:51 pm

Who else is here watching this for PE class?

  7. N I C K on May 1, 2021 at 10:53 pm

  8. Traykov540 on May 1, 2021 at 10:54 pm

Yes! I was waiting for this one.
I prefer this sport over tennis

  9. Mimi Gottfried on May 1, 2021 at 10:57 pm

Loving the video, great job as usual, Ninh!

I must say though, this sport looks like it’s for those annoying naggy people who go "ouchyyy I twisted my ankle" and drop on the ground holding their feet and rock back and forth whenever they are required to run.

  10. Youtube78910 on May 1, 2021 at 10:59 pm

Cool vid Ninh !!! I love the inclusivity. Is this a strictly sports rules channel or is there more leeway?

Pickleball in 2021 has over 120 rules changes.

  15. Richard Tickler on May 1, 2021 at 11:02 pm

i feel like loads of people try to make some cash with a variation on tennis selling you special rackets and balls

  16. Ninh Ly on May 1, 2021 at 11:03 pm

So Pickleball has been requested on and off for years, but I only decided to make it now after realising that it’s more popular I ever imagined.
Cool way to get into other racket sports, or if you just want an easier to pick up sport to learn.
Help me out by sharing this video where you can! More views = more content.

One thing- in singles, the side you serve on depends on your score. For instance if you have an odd score, such as 7, you will serve on the left side of the court. If you have an even score, such as 4, you will serve on the right side of the court.

  18. Judah Gunter on May 1, 2021 at 11:08 pm

Hey ninh good morning what happens if you play pickleball with a real pickle?😅😅🤣🤣😅

  22. Johnathon Waggoner on May 1, 2021 at 11:13 pm

can you imagine someone trying to hit the ball but hits a pickle instead, or someone eating a pickle during a game.

  23. Reila on May 1, 2021 at 11:13 pm

This is the best explanation on in the rules of pickleball that I have found. Clearly defined what the kitchen is and why. In fact I had actually been taught wrong and it makes more sense now.

  24. Jtzkb on May 1, 2021 at 11:16 pm

The looks like a fun and easy alternative to tennis . Less running means easier on the knees and good for people who are less fit and would st4ruggle to keep up in a tennis match. Also good if you’ve less space for a court.

  25. Rayven Hitt on May 1, 2021 at 11:17 pm

I researched this a few years, happy to see it getting more popular.
Ultimately the sport will never be a huge commercial success as a professional sport, simply because while the main reason a sport becomes popular is that it’s fun to play, it has to be conducive towards elite-level displays to become fun to watch.
Anyone can play Pickleball – it’s easier, less straining, and more forgiving than tennis/badminton/table tennis, while also being far, far more approachable and far, far less expensive to get into.
However, that’s also why you’ll never see "a Roger Federer of Pickleball": there is not enough depth/nuance to the gameplay nor room for physical expression that a select 0.001% of the population can achieve.

Basically: Pickleball looks like great fun and I do want to *play it*. It seems like an awesome way to spend time with friends (of all shapes and forms) in a competitive yet fun environment.
But I can’t envision myself or really anyone else wanting to *watch it*.

  26. Mark W on May 1, 2021 at 11:18 pm

I have a NVZ question that my local pickleball group has been debating. If I hit a groundstroke (not a volley) when the ball bounces outside the NVZ and my momentum carries me into the NVZ, is that a fault?

  27. King Jman on May 1, 2021 at 11:18 pm

Anyone else’s teacher is making them watch this?

  28. Daniel K on May 1, 2021 at 11:19 pm

I’ve always been intrigued by Pickleball but never really looked into it by the notion of it being a sport only seniors play. Seeing other younger people play it and see professional play as well, makes me want to give it a go too.

Is a pickelball racquet made by canning cucumber racquets?

  37. Coordinator on May 1, 2021 at 11:24 pm

Some people play point and next serve rather than server points for the sake of time.

  42. Joseph Garcia on May 1, 2021 at 11:30 pm

I’ve been playing pickleball for a few months and love it. It’s a great game that’s easy to pickup, not too demanding, and still a ton of fun. It’s more like a chess match at higher levels since the court is so small

All I could think about was that scene from inglorious basterds "now about this pickle we’re in".

As they shoot each other in the Hoden.

  47. Ash Kitt on May 1, 2021 at 11:33 pm

    They turned tennis into pickleball.
    Funniest shit I’ve ever seen.

  49. David Hebert on May 1, 2021 at 11:36 pm

Some purpose-made pickleball courts were built right next to my local park tennis courts a few years ago. I had no idea what they were at first, but saw some people playing on them when I was walking around there. I had to ask the people playing "what is this thing you’re playing?". "It’s Pickleball!" they said, and I said "Pickle…what?"

  50. David DeChamplain on May 1, 2021 at 11:39 pm

    So it’s whiffle tennis.
