This channel is dedicated to all the gold seeking Pickleballers out there who dink responsibly and stay out of the kitchen. We have all levels come through the channel, but we concentrate on the 4.0s, 4.5s and up to 5.5s.
I started this channel quite by accident, I was recording my games to do film study and get better. I did not have time or money for lessons from pro pickleball coach, so I started watching all my screwups. People that I was playing with started to ask if they could watch too and I said sure. That helped all of us a lot to improve our game, strategy, mental toughness, and techniques. Now we have new pickleball videos published several times a week. We occasionally have pro pickleball players on the channel. Mostly its non pro pickleball players on their quest to 5.0 pickleball. We have all levels come through the channel: 4.0 pickleball, 4.5 pickleball and up to 5.5 pickleball with the pros.

Keep pickleball as it is with minor Tweeks. It’s not tennis, ping ping, racquetball, etc. It’s pickleball. I like drop serve and no off hand spins to allow lesser players to remain more competitive. Absolutely do not allow rally scoring. It will ruin the game

I love the changes every year. It’s fun to learn new rules and look forward for the next year for another set of rule changes. It’s refreshing, keeps me on my toes and allows me to change things up. I am not crazy about all the new rules either but it’s fun to make changes. With rule changes every year may just make pickleball a more engaging and challenging sport for the better.

Who says you have to play the way the usaa says?

  4. M N on November 4, 2021 at 7:50 pm

Interesting video….but i have to say that I would prefer rally system score ( like volleyball ) ….maybe because im an italian player

  5. John Buch on November 4, 2021 at 7:51 pm

Stop the rule changes!! Rally serving absolutely ruined beach volleyball whereby you got a point just for siding out instead of having to dig the ball and play great defense. All for the TV. The game is great the way it is….leave it alone!! JB

  6. Voice of Reason on November 4, 2021 at 7:52 pm

Two problems with rally scoring. It makes the game boring because now the goal of the serve is to simply make a safe serve to put the ball into play. There is much less variety in serving, just like the boring second serve in tennis.

The second problem is that it makes comebacks almost impossible. If the other team is at or near game point the team which is behind has to be perfect or the game is lost. Again much less excitement.

Some more needed rule changes! Turning pickleball into a joke!!!! Chain saw serve and the rest are ridiculous!!! Go back to the original serve rule. Won’t be the fastest growing sport anymore when the serve dominates the game.

  8. Nunyo Biznis on November 4, 2021 at 7:53 pm

    Rally Scoring ENCOURAGES agressive serving.

  9. CW on November 4, 2021 at 7:55 pm

chainsaw has cheapened the game ..

  10. Dan Piedra on November 4, 2021 at 7:57 pm

Sorry folks, but the rally scoring has to be implemented. I have been a part of scoring changes to volleyball, badminton, and squash, and in all three the games move faster and result in more dynamic play where every rally counts. There are too many back-and-forth rallies which only use up time. If you want national coverage of pro pickleball tournaments on ESPN, or others, it has to move faster and all of us will get used to it.

As for the open palm serve, it is a bit of an exaggeration, but I guess they are trying to level the playing field when it comes to serves, but I do not agree with it. I also don’t like that the drop serve will be changed to have to be hit under the waist since that is what allowed you to hit creative spins.

Jesus, no earbuds? How controlling are they doing to be? What’s next — no running shoes because they’re too lightweight?

Please amend the rule against artificial rotation in the serve like this:

    1. A serve toss is given only once. The reason is a method that penalizes situations where the toss is misplaced to include an artificial spin.

    2. You cannot make a turn by both hands.

    3. No artificial rotation can be inserted between the fingers of the hand holding the ball.

  13. kraphtymac on November 4, 2021 at 8:02 pm

The best rule change they could make is to disallow rule changes.

  14. Mike Dierlam on November 4, 2021 at 8:03 pm

It’s going to be really interesting to see what rules end up changing. It’s such an interesting sport that we play in. When the NBA (National Basketball Association) adjusts the rules, pickup basketball games don’t change how they play. In pickleball, when the USAPA makes rule changes, virtually everyone will be following those rules on January 1. Chainsaw serve…….good riddance. If it’s done well, it’s extremely hard to read the spin on a pickleball from 44′ away. Rally scoring…….ugh. Changes the game more than any other proposed rule change. People will play much more conservative. There has to be a way to make the game more TV friendly. 0-0-1 start. Every person I’ve taught the game to, by about game 3, they 100% understand this rule and why it is in place. No earbuds? I’ve never worn earbuds while playing a game, but if Pickleball wants to get away from the stigma that this is a sport for grandpa and grandma, they need to stop even entertaining ideas like this. Or possibly state in the rulebook that this is only for sanctioned tournament play. The problem is that 95% of rec players are not even going to give a second thought to this rule. However, some rule stickler in a casual rec game is going to ask an opponent to remove their headphones and it’s not going to go well.

  15. Keith Comstable on November 4, 2021 at 8:03 pm

Totally agree with changing scoring to rally scoring. Volleyball is a example of having a scoring system similar to current Pickleball scoring and then changing to rally scoring. I believe the change happened sometime in the 1990’s. The time frame for most matches can be predicted, thus making tournaments easier to schedule. Increase the winner scoring somewhere between 20-25. Nothing worse than waiting ten minutes to get your next match and the score is something like 3-1. Within two years everyone will have forgotten the current scoring and be happy with the new rally scoring.

What needs to be asked (and maybe it has been) why is there any rules of these types for this game ? When Rafa Nadal came on scene and hit more spin then anyone they didn’t say "oh no – you can do that" ! It’s like they don’t want the best athletes to be playing. What’s next ? Maybe dinking it back and forth is the only way allowed to hit ? No full swings, no spin allowed on any hit ? Makes no sense to have those types of rules !

I don’t see how you can hate from outside of the club, You can’t even get in, Hahaha! Leggo

  18. Raymond Austin on November 4, 2021 at 8:06 pm

I think the chainsaw serve doesn’t really matter because it’s not a really effective shut out serve. It’s ok to outlaw drastic spin serves that can win a game only with the majority of shutout serves. The rest of the game will be lost if a person can win only from serving. — I advise not to make too many changes if it is not real necessary, otherwise people can just drop out of Pickleball completely because of the poor management of Pickleball.

  19. mcat111111 on November 4, 2021 at 8:08 pm

You lost me on the earbuds. Do you know how annoying it is to play with a player or partner that has no idea what that score is or is just called? It is like playing as a one-man team with one player zones out. Get rid of earbuds.

  20. Mike barron on November 4, 2021 at 8:10 pm

Please get a shirt that fits.

  21. Steven M Kissinger on November 4, 2021 at 8:17 pm

I just started following you. Can you elaborate on the chainsaw serve as I only have heard of it. Had how about the rally score you were talking about. Why don’t they just leave well enough alone .

  22. Robert L. on November 4, 2021 at 8:18 pm

Open palm is a must. Ping Pong would be a serve game without the open palm rule. It will happen to Pickleball is nothing is done… It gives too much advantage to the server…

  23. Mesa Somer on November 4, 2021 at 8:22 pm

The best games have exciting rallies. A game where someone has a stunning serve and gains point after point on the serve–not fun. Even when I am scoring the points, its still not as fun a game as when you get into the incredible rallies. Ban the chainsaw and go back to hitting a serve underhand out of the air below the waist. Rally scoring is fun, but really favors the team that makes no errors, so perhaps discourages teams from taking chances. Again, maybe not as exciting a game if everyone is being super careful. And the good, strong reason to start the game with one serve –so that the serving team doesn’t get too much of an advantage, surely outweighs the idea that a newbie can’t understand it at first. The two seconds it might take a normal person to grasp why the game starts at 0-0-2 is not worth changing a valid, sensible rule.

Good stuff Joey – Its USAP btw.

  25. Kevin Ruback on November 4, 2021 at 8:26 pm

Great video, and I agree with your takes on these rules. Serves: What makes Pickleball fun is that you get to RALLY! Let’s eliminate all these serves that make the game like Tennis, where half the points are on shot points. DULL, DULL, DULL!! The open palm rule may go a bit far, but I;d rather see that level of specificity than this wild west anything goes direction the sport has taken recently. Startin the game at 0-0-1: I LOVE you characterization of this as "the Dementia rule". Nuff said. Starting at 0-0-2 makes the game more even. Keep it. Rally Scoring: NFW!! I agree with you. Rally scoring RUINS the game. IF they make this change, My friends and I will just ignore it. I don’t know A SINGLE PERSON that wants rally scoring.

  26. Riker ESOTERIC REMNANT on November 4, 2021 at 8:29 pm

Sorry, I came from competitive table tennis and if you allowed people to spin the ball out of their hand, you basically can have lousy players getting all their points on serves. Plenty of spin is able to be applied by the paddle or racket without using additional methods. It’s also worth mentioning that your opponent has a chance to recognize the spin being applied when it’s not hidden or disguised. Also you take away from the heart of the game which is good rallies.

  27. John McCready on November 4, 2021 at 8:31 pm

An old saying that still applies. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. In our rec games with four courts once three finish, then it is rally scoring. It is rare there is not a collective groan when the third game finishes and it is announced. This is not the game I fell in love with. Also leave the 0-0-2 the way it is.

  28. taylerroal on November 4, 2021 at 8:32 pm

Great players can easily return great serves.

  29. Neal Conner on November 4, 2021 at 8:33 pm

The one serve rule is stupid. Coin flip will still decide who is serving first and losing team gets choice of sides. Rally scoring makes you focus. It’s like taking away mulligans in golf. Great defense is rewarded in rally, you can’t make stupid shots, like missing a serve The game goes faster and this is only way for the game to make it Prime time live TV. As for chainsaw like serves, the hocus pocus scoring needs to be eliminated. No earbuds is stupid, unless they are trying to eliminate players possibly being coached while playing.. giving that player an unfair advantage. I see this rule only applying in tournaments and never in rec play.

  30. Patrick Snyder on November 4, 2021 at 8:37 pm

how about not allowing paddle skins to be the color of the pickle balls and no clothing worn by competitors the color of the pickle balls!

  31. Nan Spier on November 4, 2021 at 8:38 pm

Volleyball was win-by-serve only scoring for YEARS until the beach game went to TV and then they went to rally scoring to "make it more exciting" for the sport AND the court was actually shrunk because there was too much offensive wins. 🙁 So if pickleball goes to rally scoring, will they also extend the final score to 21, instead of 11, for the win? And then will you have to EARN the final point with a serve instead of with an error from the opponent? Opening a can of worms for sure.

  32. Michael Sliwa Speaks on November 4, 2021 at 8:39 pm

I was big time into volleyball when it went from side out scoring to rally scoring. It wasn’t a big deal like we all thought it would be. Especially if the spin gets eliminated from the toss on the serve since that will ease big serves in the game and therefore reduce service errors.

  33. Thejoeb on November 4, 2021 at 8:39 pm

I thought last years rule changes were not needed for the most part, and I moreso think most of this years rule changes are not needed, and some are downright harmful to the game.

  34. Pj Pj on November 4, 2021 at 8:39 pm

Let’s face it it’s a west coast run on pickleball with the ppa running things (big money) ..every young player likes Zane s serve and are using it…because these old players…McMuffin, Morgan evans…all the players that don’t have one, want to band it……they should go back to tennis…..doesn’t matter Zane will still be a top three or four player regardless. But pickleball do you want to become tennis or be innovative…I would say the later ty

  36. Aah Yes on November 4, 2021 at 8:44 pm

Sounds like main proposals are open-palm serve toss, drop serve contact must (also) be below waist, & rally scoring. I gather that eliminates chainsaw & finger-flick spin. Idea being any serve spin should come from the striking rather than from the toss.

My thoughts: I don’t mind, think we can still apply pressure with serve precision & variety even without a spinning toss, enough to make 2nd shots defensive & 3rd shots easier. Intention and skill still generate advantage and we need that if it’s to be a competitive sport rather than just ‘let’s all play super safe shots til someone’s mind finally wanders’.

Besides, I think spin tosses increase the impact of randomness as all but a virtuoso must necessarily aim the strike of a spinning ball with higher margin for error.

And isn’t ‘below-waist’ enough restriction on serve contact? Why bother about paddle orientation or direction?

At least in unrefereed play, bad line calls seem common enough to not need further confusion over whether part of the paddle was higher than the wrist or it wasn’t rising through contact. Do you know if they plan to fully scrap those 2 old rules or if still only on drop serves for some reason.

If it does change to rally scoring I hope they make games to 21 instead of 11.

  37. Pete Manning on November 4, 2021 at 8:45 pm

The two biggies for me are: 002 start & Rally scoring. To change one of those would really be changing the game we know in a big way. Leave them alone please!
Chain/Zane serve… ok…I just started learning it but can live without. Drop serve- don’t care. Earbuds? Why is that even being considered?
I think you said it best….baby steps please. I don’t want to have to back to golf…:)

  38. Bill Anton on November 4, 2021 at 8:45 pm

Joe, you are awesome. Thanks for this video. OMG, really! on these proposed changes. Rally scoring will change entire game, nothing could be more stupid. Games will last like five minutes. Ridiculous. No earbuds, give me a break. Listening to music, by yourself, not with a boom box, not OK!!?? Where do they get this stuff? Changing the serve rules AGAIN!! Just stop!!! As if it’s not confusing and controversial enough already. How can we all contact the USAP with our thoughts on these proposed changes?

  39. David Perkey on November 4, 2021 at 8:45 pm

Omg, the game is evolving and changing and growing.. we need to put a stop to this right away!!!
